Sourcewell and cooperative purchasing

Yes, Sourcewell is a service cooperative and local government unit, public corporation and public agency pursuant to the Minnesota Constitution and enabling law Minn. Stat. § 123A.21.

Sourcewell is governed by an eight-member board of directors made up of local elected officials including county commissioners, city council members, mayors, and school board members from our five-county service area.

According to the American Bar Association, cooperative purchasing is procurement conducted by, or on behalf of, one or more government units for use by other government units. In other words, buyers and sellers capture efficiency and cost savings by connecting through purchasing cooperatives.

Sourcewell conducts solicitations on behalf of all eligible government agencies, resulting in highly competitive contracts and pricing discounts. This allows cities and other units of government to maximize taxpayer money by saving time, reducing costs, and gaining access to best-value products and services. Sourcewell is authorized to establish cooperative purchasing contracts on behalf of itself and participating agencies. Whether your agency can use cooperative contracts depends on your state and local regulations. We offer a state-by-state breakdown to guide you. If you are making a purchase using federal funds, additional regulations may apply.

Ultimately, it’s your agency’s responsibility to ensure compliance. Our Government Accounts team is here to answer your questions about processes, documentation, and more are met as you explore using Sourcewell to make purchases for your agency.

Participation is free and available to all governmental, tribal, educational (K-12 or higher education), and nonprofit entities. There are no fees, commitments, or obligation to purchase. To get started, register online.
